Chilliwack Alzheimer’s Walk Sunday afternoon

May 28, 2023 | 9:54 AM

CHILLIWACK — Across British Columbia, thousands of people are expected to attend their local Walk for Alzheimer’s Sunday. The event is the largest annual fundraising event for the Society.

But it is also a way to honour and recognize individuals who are dealing with the disease. In each community across the province, a local honouree is named to lead the walk.

The Walk in Chilliwack will be led by Taylor Ogston and his wife of 34 years, Karen Stewart. Ogston started noticing changes three and a half years ago. He was initially diagnosed with a mild cognitive impairment but it soon progressed into dementia.

“At first, the diagnosis felt like a bomb going off,” Taylor said. But over time, he’s managed to accept it. “I’ve shaken the fear and I’m no longer trying to hide it either.”

There are more than 85 thousand British Columbians living with dementia. The Alzheimers Society provides people living with dementia, along with their caregivers, support to get the best quality of life throughout the progression of the disease. The cost of the support is provided through funding raised at events like the annual walk.

The 2023 walk takes place Sunday at the Chilliwack Landing Sports Centre at 45530 Spadina Avenue. Registration begins at 1 p.m. with the walk scheduled at 2 p.m. Donations will be accepted at the walk but will also be taken online by clicking here.
