ABBOTSFORD — Like nearly all Canadian cities, Abbotsford’s population is aging. It’s one of the reasons the City of Abbotsford introduced the Aging Together program more than five years ago. As part of the program, it’s throwing its weight behind the Aging Together Abbotsford symposium next month.

The one-day event is aimed at residents in the 55 and over crowd. It’s free and will run all day on Saturday June 10 at the Sevenoaks Alliance Church. Registration opened this week.

The symposium is meant to provide seniors and their families with current information on aging with an active living perspective. Along with workshops and information booths, a number of speakers are featured.

Provincial Seniors Advocate Isobel Mackenzie, will kick off the symposium in the morning and provide attendees with a report on the current state of seniors in B.C. Dan Levitt, an ageism expert and gerontologist will also make a presentation on combatting ageism.

The resource fair portion of the event will offer workshops on physical health and movement, the importance of medicine reviews, and fraud awareness; and gives attendees the opportunity to connect with service providers and resources available to seniors in Abbotsford.

The City says its Ageing Together program is an essential part of the City’s adherence to age-friendly principles, and aligns with Council’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and connected community for all residents, including seniors.
