Air Quality Advisory issued for the Fraser Valley

May 15, 2023 | 8:16 PM

VANCOUVER — An Air Quality Advisory has been issued by the Metro Vancouver Regional District. In a news release Monday, it says the move is being taken because of high concentrations of ground-level ozone. Conditions are not expected to change until cooler temperatures arrive.

In addition, the Davis Lake wildfire near Mission is producing smoke that is contributing to the problem, especially through parts of the Fraser Valley.

The advisory is in effect over the Central Fraser Valley, the Eastern Fraser Valley and Northeast sections of Metro Vancouver.

While in effect, impacted residents should avoid strenuous outdoor activities during mid-afternoon to the early evening, when conditions are at their worst. Instead residents should consider easier outdoor activities, such as walking instead of running, where you do not have to breathe as hard.

Given the hot temperatures, the Regional District is also reminding the public to stay cool and hydrated and seek out indoor spaces with air conditioning including community centres, libraries and malls. Overheating is dangerous for most people at risk, and both cool and clean air are important.

If you are experiencing symptoms such as chest discomfort, shortness of breath, coughing or wheezing, seek prompt medical attention. Residents should also check in on family, friends and neighbours often and for emergencies, call 9-1-1.
