CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack Fire Department personnel responded to a report of a trailer fire at a trailer compound on First Nations land near Island 22, west of Young Road, in Fairfield Island Saturday morning.

Chilliwack Fire Chief Ian Josephson confirmed in an email Saturday that a camper or trailer-type unit caught fire at 5:17 a.m. Eighteen firefighters from Halls No. 1 and 4 responded.

The incident was isolated to a single trailer with no exposures, Josephson said.

There were no injuries associated with the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Josephson said.

In a visit to the camp Saturday afternoon, a reporter spoke to a man who lives just a few metres from the trailer that caught fire. He said he heard a few pops outside his own trailer early Saturday morning, but no major explosions. He witnessed the trailer in flames when he emerged from his own trailer and said the camper was fully engulfed within approximately three minutes. He did not see anyone fleeing the scene of the fire.

The site where the fire occurred is an encampment occupied by approximately 25-30 residents with at least 30 trailers present, according to Linda Cobetto, a 51-year-old traffic flagger who lives with her husband in a trailer with a wood-burning stove. The camp is reportedly located on First Nations land and is accessible from Cartmell Road.

Fraser Valley Today was first tipped off to the fire by Chilliwack resident Julie Hiscock, a newspaper carrier who delivers newspapers overnight and often listens to a scanner involving Chilliwack Fire Department.
