Logger competition returns to Mission for the first time since 1979

MISSION – After a hiatus of nearly five decades, a community tradition and spectator favourite will return to Mission this summer to entertain residents and visitors equally.

The City of Mission announced Wednesday that the Mission Logger Sports Competition will be held for the first time since 1979.

The city says the revival of the beloved event is a testament to Mission’s deep forestry roots and the enduring longevity and value of the Mission Municipal Forest.

“Forestry is at the very heart of our community, so it is incredible to see the tradition of Logger Sports coming back to Mission,” Mission Mayor Paul Horn said. “If people have not seen a logger sport event in the past, I hope they will check it out. It is always incredibly exciting and fun!”

Managed by the City of Mission’s Forestry Department since 1958, the Mission Municipal Forest is one of the few municipally operated forests in Canada and continues to be an important part of the municipality’s history and identity.

This free, family-friendly event welcomes both professional and local competitors demonstrating their skill, strength, and talent in a range of fast-paced logger sports events.

Spectators can witness high-energy competitions like axe throwing, crosscut sawing, chainsaw disciplines, speed chopping, and more.

In addition to the competition, attendees will have opportunities to learn more about forestry in Mission through interactive booths and community engagement activities.

It will be held Saturday, August 22 at the Fraser River Heritage Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“It’s great to see the the return of logger sports to the City of Mission, home of the first community forest in Canada,” Councillor Danny Plecas said.
