Abbotsford motorist cites ‘need for sleep’ in driving over 2x the speed limit in school zone

ABBOTSFORD – A 33-year-old Abbotsford motorist thought driving nearly triple the speed through a school zone of 30 km/h on a daytime afternoon would get him home faster so he could sleep.

Instead, the motorist earned a week without his vehicle and a ticket for excessive speeding.

Police in Abbotsford say they observed a motorist blazing through a posted 30 km/h zone near Old Yale Road and Upland Cresent Monday afternoon. During the traffic stop, the 33-year-old man told police that he had just finished work and wanted to get home to sleep.

“We cannot stress enough how dangerous this kind of behaviour is, and the very real potential for devastating consequences. His vehicle was impounded for seven days, and he was issued a ticket for excessive speeding,” AbbyPD Sgt. Paul Walker said.

Overnight, the AbbyPD’s Traffic Enforcement Unit yanked four impaired drivers from the road. One of them, a 54‑year‑old man, made things significantly worse by refusing to stop for a traffic stop.

“And as if that wasn’t enough, when officers caught up and attempted to arrest him after he got out and tried to run into his house, he decided it was a good idea to fight with police. He’s now facing a list of criminal charges,” Sgt. Walker said. “Speeding through school zones and driving impaired aren’t harmless mistakes—they’re choices that put everyone else at risk. Our officers will keep doing the work required to take dangerous drivers off the road. Slow down, and drive sober —because the consequences, as we’ve seen, are entirely preventable.”
