Picket lines go up as transit workers launch full scale strike across the Fraser Valley

CHILLIWACK — Fraser Valley commuters and students are dealing with the ramifications of a transit strike as they start their new week.

Unionized bus drivers and maintenance workers walked off the job this morning to back contract demands. It means there will be no transit service for riders in Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Agassiz-Harrison, Hope, Mission and customers using the Fraser Valley Express.

The labour dispute is between BC Transit’s contractor, First Transit, and its unionized employees, members of CUPE 561.

In a news release, CUPE 561 President Jane Gibbons said three days of talks last week failed to make headway. “This employer has completely refused to meaningfully discuss the regional wage disparity and lack of a pension,” said Gibbons. “It’s gotten so bad that we’re left with no alternative but to shut down services.”

Workers are looking for wage parity with their counterparts in the lower mainland. CUPE 561 claims members who work for First Transit are being paid 32 per cent less than other transit operators in the region. Their last contract expired in April, 2020.

No contract talks were held over the weekend leading up to the strike and a union spokesperson says at this point, no talks are planned this week.

Students who rely on transit to attend classes at the University of the Fraser Valley have already had to deal with two earlier service disruptions in the lead up to the full-scale strike. In a statement to Fraser Valley Today, the school says it has communicated with students in advance of the strike. While all classes and activities at all campuses will continue as scheduled, faculty have identified learning options to accommodate students who are unable to commute to campus as a result of the strike.

BC Transit says handyDART service for customers requiring transportation to renal dialysis, cancer treatment and multiple sclerosis appointments in Abbotsford and Mission has been deemed essential and will continue to operate during the walkout. However, all other pre-booked trips are being cancelled.
