Vancouver Police increasing patrols in DTES after week of gun violence
VANCOUVER — Vancouver usually has an exemplary reputation for being a safe tourist destination, a place to watch the Canucks or Whitecaps, or catching a performance at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre.
But gun violence in a rougher area of town has police redoubling their efforts to suppress recent episodes of crime.
Vancouver Police will increase the number of police officers in the Downtown Eastside following a week of gun-related incidents that left two men injured and residents of the surrounding neighbourhoods disturbed by what transpired.
In a news release this week, VPD says it will beef up on the number of officers in the area after a a 24-year-old man was shot Thursday (Feb. 23) while riding his bike near East Hastings Street, and in the midst of a four-day span in which VPD officers have recovered 14 real and replica firearms from the neighbourhood.
