CHILLIWACK — The Fraser Valley Regional District board of directors, which consists of elected officials from Abbotsford, Mission, Chilliwack, Hope and the surrounding rural areas, will consider discussion on a proposal to ban the sale and discharge of fireworks in two electoral areas at its meeting tonight.

According to agenda item 8.1 on tonight’s docket, directors Cory Cassel (representing Electoral Area G, Deroche, Hatzic Island, Dewdney, and Nicomen Island east of Mission) and Mel Waardenburg (representing Area C, Hemlock Valley, Harrison Mills, Lake Errock, and Sts’ailes First Nation) are slated to speak on a proposal that would ban the sale and discharge of fireworks in their two electoral areas.

The motion, if passed, would direct staff to prepare a report on the implementation of a bylaw prohibiting the sale and discharge of fireworks in the two electoral areas.

It’s not clear if the proposed fireworks ban discussion is related to an outbreak of fires stemming from fireworks last year. There was no staff report attached to the agenda item.
