Veterans in Chilliwack, Abbotsford join forces in annual fundraiser for the Forces

CHILLIWACK — Local veterans, civilians and members of the Canadian Armed Forces are linking up to support Canadian military members and their families at this year’s Canadian Walk for Veterans.

Chilliwack is set to start the three-kilometre loop at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 19, at the All Sappers Memorial Park on 5571 Vedder Road.

The walk will be led by Cadet Instructors Cadre Captain Eugene Collinson, whose journey in the Forces began when he enlisted in 1978. He organized walks for True Patriot Love at the White Rock location and has since brought the tradition to Chilliwack after relocating.

He says he became a team lead to “make sure the sacrifices of those who served are never forgotten”, and to “help with the scar that you cannot see on the men and women that come home and fight with demons every day, quietly keeping them to themselves.”

Collinson joined the Order of St. George in April 2025, along with Dame Gwen Settle, who will lead the Abbotsford loop the following week.

Settle is a Cold War Navy Veteran volunteering with the Canadian Walk for Veterans to continue community connection and remembrance in Abbotsford and the Fraser Valley.

“We are a family. We help and care for each other. No one should face pain or mental health challenges alone,” she said.

She will join fellow team leads Doug Lumley and Peter Lacoste at the walk on September 26 at Mill Lake in Centennial Park.

The theme for this ninth annual Canadian Walk for Veterans is “Stronger Together: No One Heals Alone”.

Those who cannot attend a walk at any of the 30 nationwide locations but still want to support the cause can sign up for a virtual walk they can take anytime, anywhere.

All participants will receive a 2026 challenge coin designed and created by Veteran-owned Sharkz Coins of Esquimalt.
