Victoria teachers say school violence an ‘epidemic,’ report tells of 6,000 incidents
The teachers’ union in Greater Victoria is urging immediate action after a report outlined what it called a “growing and widespread epidemic” of violence in local schools, including an average of more than 20 instances of violence against staff per day.
The Greater Victoria Teachers’ Association said the report released Wednesday drew from a survey and a focus group across the Greater Victoria School District’s 46 elementary, middle and secondary schools, as well as 6,187 violent-incident reports from the Greater Victoria School District.
Those reports from September 2024 to March 2026 excluded student-on-student violence and amounted to an average of 21 cases of reported violence against staff each day, with 95 per cent of the teachers saying they have experienced classroom violence within the last year.
Association president Carolyn Howe said the situations described in the report were not surprising for any educator who has worked in B.C. public schools over the last decade.
