Massive Ainslie Creek wildfire could close Highway 8 between Merritt and Spences Bridge
MERRITT, B.C. — The massive Ainslie Creek wildfire burning within the Brunswick Complex may cause the closure of Highway 8 between Merritt and Spences Bridge.
The BC Wildfire Service says crews saw an increase in fire behaviour on the northeast flank Monday (Aug. 11) with spotting across Nooaitch Creek near Highway 8.
In an update at around 9:30 p.m. Monday, the wildfire service said fire activity during the night may require the closure of Highway 8. As of Tuesday morning, the roadway connecting Merritt and Spences Bridge remains open.
“Structural protection and water delivery are set up from [nine kilometres] on Prospect FSR to Nooaitch and will be staffed with structure crews overnight, the wildfire service states. “Wildland crews will continue to strengthen and hold guards and support structural protection personnel. We currently have 24-hour operations on this area of the fire.”
