SEA TO SKY HIGHWAY – Roughly a week after a motorcycle crash claimed the life of a female rider who was reportedly speeding and driving erratically, police say a 22-year-old motorcyclist with a Class 8 learner’s license has been heavily fined for dangerous speeding on Highway 99.

BC Highway Patrol spokesperson Corporal Michael McLaughlin says police obtained a speed reading of 177 km/h in a posted 80 zone on Saturday, July 11, at 7:43 a.m., near Furry Creek, B.C.

Police have identified the motorcycle rider as a 22-year-old Vancouver woman who only had a Class 7 (passenger vehicle learner) and Class 8 (motorcycle learner) licence.

“Sometimes we feel like a broken record when we say that speed kills people,” said Cpl. McLaughlin. “But clearly some people aren’t getting the message. Being 97 km/h over the limit could easily have repeated a tragedy from only one week ago on the same highway.”

The motorcyclist received a seven-day impound for excessive speeding, a ticket for excessive speed over 60 km/h for a fine of $483, at least three years of high-risk driver premiums and escalating insurance that will bring the total costs to just under $2,500, Cpl. McLaughlin confirmed. The driver also bears the costs of the related tow and impound.

“Considering the egregious speed and the lack of experience of the rider, BC Highway Patrol is also recommending that the BC Superintendent of Motor Vehicles conduct a high-risk driving review for the driver. High-risk driving reviews can lead to additional sanctions such as a prohibition from driving,” Cpl. McLaughlin said.

The incident Cpl. McLaughlin referenced was a fatality on Sunday, July 5. A female motorcyclist was pronounced deceased on Highway 99 near Squamish after she struck an RV vehicle amid reports she and another motorcycle rider were speeding and driving erratically.

According to a statement from BC RCMP spokesperson Staff Sgt. Kris Clark, a BC Highway Patrol officer was conducting speed enforcement on Highway 99 at approximately 5:30 p.m. Sunday evening, July 5. The officer observed two motorcycles who were reportedly speeding and driving erratically. The BCHP officer left their position along the highway and moments later located one of the motorcyclists who was involved in a collision with a recreational vehicle. The female motorcyclist was declared deceased at the scene.
