LYTTON — A Lytton retiree is looking to get back on his feet as the community recoups its losses from another wildfire.

The 76-year-old Hugh Poole received a call on the evening of June 19, when the fire broke out, telling him to evacuate and get off the mountain immediately.

“He immediately jumped in his car and headed down into the Village,” said Don Glasgow, the fundraising organizer. “[He] escaped the fire shirtless, and without his wallet or identification.”

When he returned, nothing was left standing.

Glasgow, who knows the experience all too well, then organized the GoFundMe in response.

“I am a lifelong Lytton-area resident who lost my home in the 2021 Lytton Creek Wildfire. I am asking if you will please join me in helping Hugh get back on his feet,” he wrote.

Tricia Thorpe, a director with the Thompson-Nicola Regional District, told The Canadian Press there is sadness that the latest fire destroyed at least one home, but also noted that the community has been better prepared overall after the 2021 blaze.

“I think that it’s almost in our DNA, you know? The minute the snow is gone, you’ve got a go-bag packed, and you’ve got things ready to go, and you’re vigilant,” Thorpe said.

“I think we’ve made connections that we didn’t have in ’21 because, when it comes to disaster, in my opinion, your strongest assets are your people in your community, and those connections you have.”

BC Wildfire currently lists the Saw Creek fire as under control.

The fundraiser has raised $1,980 of its $10,000 goal at the time of writing.
