CHILLIWACK — From Canex Building Supplies to Gulf & Fraser Fishermen’s Credit Union, businesses across the Fraser Valley are stepping up to help the Chilliwack Hospital Foundation in its mission to support the hospital’s capital needs and enable health care professionals to provide quality care to all Chilliwack residents.

Thanks to the generous donation from a downtown Chilliwack church, a Chilliwack business, as well as a Chilliwack philanthropist, and the greater Chilliwack community, the all-volunteer, foundation continues to reach its fundraising goals without any paid administrative staff or overhead.

The Chilliwack Hospital Foundation announced Thursday morning (Dec. 22) that Main Street Church, businessman John O’Connor, Chilliwack business Canex Building Supplies, and the community have donated money to purchase four electrocardiogram machines at Chilliwack General Hospital.

Shawn Vandop from Main Street Church presented a $22,000 cheque to the foundation recently as a means of giving back to the Chilliwack community.

The giving campaign for the ECG machines launched November 15 and continues through to December 31, but they exceeded their $88,000 goal is just one month.

“Chilliwack has immense pride for the community and truly knows how to come together to make amazing things happen,” said Leanna Kemp, executive director of the Chilliwack Chamber and board member with the Chilliwack Hospital Foundation, in a text message Thursday morning (Dec. 22). “This is just another way they have shown it. We cannot thank our donors enough for their generosity in past years, this year and of course in the future! Without each of them, this much-needed equipment would not be possible.”

The campaign arose when the Chilliwack Hospital Foundation learned that the current ECG machines at CGH were 22 years old, whereas the average life span is only seven years, Kemp said.

“While the machines still work, they were needing some maintenance and parts that were no longer available, so kick in the giving campaign and we could not believe what happened!” Kemp wrote. “Thank you on behalf of the entire Chilliwack Hospital Foundation board of directors and the staff at Chilliwack General Hospital.”

The Chilliwack Hospital Foundation keeps all donations in Chilliwack, and invites businesses and residents to support Chilliwack Hospital by being a 500 Club donor, by giving in honour or memory of a loved one, or creating a legacy by making a planned gift in estate planning.
