CHILLIWACK — Residents are invited to get their steps in while helping out a local cat rescue.

ABC Cat Rescue has been selected for “Progress for Paws”, a 20-day nationwide campaign led by Nude Beverages in which every 10,000 steps would send $1 to animal rescues across Canada.

The volunteer-run non-profit, founded by Chilliwack resident Brittany Gidon in 2017, also runs a spay-and-neuter program alongside its foster and adoption efforts.

“She started the ‘Last Litter Program’ to spay and neuter cats to reduce abandoned and stray litters in the community,” said Allysha Reeves, a volunteer with the rescue. “Having personally seen the ongoing heartbreak of pregnant cats and their kittens, she knew she had to educate, advocate and take action.”

Reeves added that volunteers work by responding to community requests for help, managing adoptions and events, and developing fundraising ideas.

“Larger rescues have the ability to gain more funding, while smaller ones must come up with more ways to get the financial assistance. Brittany deserves this more than anyone I have worked with,” she said.

The campaign is set to run from May 1 to 20 on the Strava app

The participant with the most steps at the end of the challenge wins $2,000 and an additional $500 donation to a rescue of their choice.
