ABBOTSFORD — Residents may have noticed heavy police presence in an Abbotsford neighbourhood as police responded to a report of a suspicious individual early this morning.

Residents reported up to a dozen police cars heading to Immel Street and Saddle Street at 9 a.m. Friday, March 6.

The Abbotsford Police Department has since confirmed that it was responding to a call from a resident about four people who did not appear to be from the neighbourhood.

Upon arriving, the first officer stopped a 33-year-old man known to police for property offences, but the man then became non-compliant with police direction.

The officer then noticed what seemed to be a firearm in his possession and requested additional officers to conduct a high-risk, gunpoint arrest.

The man was taken into custody and remains there pending criminal charges.

Police have also confirmed that the firearm was a pellet gun. Three additional knives were also found on the man during the search.

“Community safety is a shared responsibility, and this incident highlights the importance of reporting suspicious activity,” said Sgt. Paul Walker with the AbbyPD. “AbbyPD extends sincere thanks to the alert resident who took the time to call in something that didn’t feel right.”
