AGASSIZ — Multiple Agassiz Fire Department engines and at least two B.C. EHS ambulances were paged after first responders were notified about a vehicle that crashed into the Fraser River Wednesday afternoon near Seabird Island.

According to scanner traffic and the Pulse Point app, Agassiz & Seabird Island fire crews were paged at approximately 3:30 p.m. for the report of a vehicle that entered the Fraser River and rolled over. Two ambulances from Chilliwack and one from Agassiz were paged and reportedly responded. The Pulse Point app indicated the accident scene was Wahleach Crossing Road, and later revised to Dyke Road on the banks of the Fraser River.

One patient inside the vehicle that went over an embankment and into the river was reportedly in and out of consciousness, while the other 2 patients had what first responders said were relatively minor injuries, according to scanner traffic.

One patient had to be extricated from the vehicle and brought to the road so that paramedics could render medical aid.

A helicopter was initially paged, and a landing zone was going to be set up by Agassiz firefighters. However, due to a lack of light, the helicopter was called off and/or stood down.

Agassiz Fire notified dispatch at 4:20 p.m. that one vehicle remained in the Fraser River and was submerged approximately 2/3 of the way in the waterway. Agassiz Fire notified dispatch around the same time that RCMP would respond in the morning to oversee the vehicle removal process.
