Abbotsford Canucks sign two defencemen after 10 winless games, several injured players

ABBOTSFORD — This year’s Calder Cup champions are facing off against San Jose with two much-needed players after going winless for nearly a month.

The Abbotsford Canucks are on a franchise record 10-game losing streak, in part due to a roster leaking out onto injured reserve.

Players like Jett Woo and Guillaume Brisebois are both still out of commission. Netminders Nikita Tolopilo and Ty Young have also gotten hurt, while Jiri Patera had been called up to play with the Vancouver Canucks as their emergency goalie, leaving Abbotsford with a goaltender-shaped void now filled by AHL rookie Jonathan Lemieux.

General Manager Ryan Johnson has since announced two new defence additions to the team.

Jake Murray, 23, has been signed on to a professional try-out agreement (PTO) after three seasons playing in the ECHL, scoring seven goals and 41 assists across 107 regular-season games.

Also signed on to a PTO is 25-year-old blueliner Phip Waugh, who has scored five goals and nine assists across his 53-game ECHL career.

The Abby Canucks look to bounce back with their experimental roster for Armed Forces Night this evening, November 11, against the San Jose Barracuda. Puck is set to drop at 7 p.m. in the Abbotsford Centre.
