Fraser Health to close Mission Memorial Hospital ER for over 28 hours this weekend

Oct 30, 2026 | 3:49 PM

MISSION – Fraser Health says it will close the emergency department at Mission Memorial Hospital for over 28 hours this weekend due to physician staffing challenges.

In a statement posted to social media, but not sent to area news media outlets, the regional health authority says it will close the ER from 5 p.m. Friday evening, Oct. 30, until Saturday, Oct. 31 at 8 a.m., and then turn around and do it again from 5 p.m. Saturday through to 8 a.m. Sunday morning.

Altogether, the ER will be closed for 30 hours this weekend.

After 5 p.m., Fraser Health says emergency-trained nurses will continue to be on site and available to support walk-in patients needing basic care, assist with re-direction of care and/or transfer patients with urgent needs to a neighbouring hospital.

Citing physician staffing challenges, Fraser Health referred to the ongoing issue as “temporary overnight service interruptions,” though the interruptions aren’t temporary. They happened at least six times in 2025 and have occurred on several occasions in 2026.

There will also be another ER closure on Sunday, November 22, from 5 p.m. through to Monday morning, Nov. 23 at 8 a.m. For real-time updates, please visit fraserhealth.ca/mmhed. The page will be updated in instances when physician coverage is secured, and a service interruption is no longer needed.

Fraser Health says people experiencing a medical emergency should immediately call 9-1-1.
