MISSION – Police in Mission say they’re investigating a peculiar incident in which pedestrian crossing lights at an intersection were apparently tampered with last week, leading to the arrest of three people thanks to an alert RCMP officer.

According to a statement from Mission RCMP spokesperson Corporal Harrison Mohr, the incident unfolded at around 8:20 p.m. on Monday, October 5, when a witness called police to report two people seemingly tampering with pedestrian crossing lights on Hurd Street near Scott Avenue. The intersection in question is located near Mission Memorial Hospital.

Corporal Mohr says a Mission RCMP officer responded and confirmed that loose wiring was hanging down from the crosswalk light pole. The officer conducted patrols of the area, and found a vehicle parked at a coffee shop nearby, with two of the three people in the vehicle matching the description of the suspects. Drug paraphernalia was also visible inside the vehicle, Cpl. Mohr said.

The officer arrested all three, Cpl. Mohr said, and located a small amount of fentanyl, a large amount of cannabis, and a baton.
