CHILLIWACK – With a few exceptions, a majority of the Chilliwack Board of Education candidates attended a mid-afternoon forum this past week with an underlying goal of giving the public a chance to meet who might govern SD33 the next four years.

The Grand Hall, an elegant venue in District 1881, reported on social media this past week that 14 trustee candidates were able to attend the nonpartisan forum this past Thursday, October 8.

Candidates took part in rotating groups and were given an opportunity to respond to questions about the role of a school trustee, student learning and achievement, financial budgets and fiscal priorities, safe schools, parent and community involvement and effective school board governance.

The 14 candidates who participated consisted of Barbara Bednarski, Brooke Bouwsema-Cardinal, Cary Moore, Christine Kruger, Darren Ollinger, David Swankey, Hayden Rampton, Katie Bartel, Leah Kelley, Margaret Reid, Michael Carter, Paul Henderson, Sadie Hesketh and Willow Reichelt.

Chilliwack residents are invited to watch a recording of the discussions on YouTube: https://youtu.be/YV8KVruxn5A?si=qi1MeX1w295WKhkp.

The Grand Hall noted that there were some microphone and audio challenges toward the beginning of the event. Some candidates’ responses were described as too quiet to be fully picked up by a microphone. It said the audio improved as the forum continued, and apologized for any portions that might be inaudible for viewers.

Otherwise, the venue expressed thanks to the two moderators and an event organizer.

“Thank you to those who participated, to our hosts Clint Hames and Corinne McCabe, to Teri Westerby who helped organize and capture the event, and to everyone who joined us in person,” the Grand Hall said. “Most importantly, thank you to everyone taking the time to learn about the candidates and participate in our local democracy.”

General voting day will happen this Saturday, October 17.
