MISSION – A 42-year-old man who was arrested in September for his alleged involvement in four catalytic converter thefts in Mission has been arrested yet again.

Mission RCMP spokesperson Corporal Harrison Mohr says two more catalytic converters were cut from vehicles in Mission last week, leading to the arrest of the 42-year-old man whose name was not released by police.

In the two most recent incidents, the recent newcomer to Mission was found to be in possession of a catalytic convertor and a reciprocating saw.

Corporal Mohr says the man was held in custody and has been charged with four counts of theft, for dates ranging from August 8 to September 30.

Corporal Mohr says Mission RCMP have also recommended additional charges of flight from police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and obstructing a peace officer, after he allegedly drove away from a traffic stop in August.

The previous four incidents Cpl. Mohr referenced involved a brazen midday theft from a vehicle parked on Horne Street at 2nd Avenue on Wednesday, Sept. 2. An alert citizen inside a nearby building observed a man crawling underneath a parked vehicle and immediately suspected he might be stealing the catalytic converter. Police say she was able to film the man as he walked away and contacted police about the matter. Although the video didn’t show a clear image of the suspect’s face, it provided police with other useful descriptors about the man.

A second theft was reported from a parking lot along London Avenue on Friday, September 4. CCTV footage from that incident depicted a man wearing dark clothing manoeuvre underneath a vehicle around 5:30 p.m., and leave moments later. Two more thefts were reported on Sunday, September 6, from vehicles parked on Wren Street and on James Street in Mission.

Due to the cell phone footage provided by the first witness, Mission RCMP developed a solid suspect description and kept an eye out for the the man throughout the weekend. On Sunday afternoon, Sept. 6, a member of Mission RCMP’s Crime Reduction Unit on patrol in the area of Haig Street and Logan Avenue located a man matching the description of the suspect. The man was arrested, and a catalytic converter and a battery-powered cutting saw were found in his bag. The four vehicles previously targeted were all Mitsubishis.

“Mission RCMP highlight this as a good example of the community and police working together to solve crime: the cell phone footage from the first witness helped to provide a suspect description; CCTV footage from the second incident provided further information about the man; and the prompt reporting from the third and fourth witnesses helped police to narrow their search area for the man,” Cpl. Mohr said.

In early September, Cpl. Mohr said the 42-year-old man had recently moved to Mission from Alberta.

Anyone else who has had their catalytic convertor stolen recently should report it to police immediately. Mission RCMP can be reached at 604-826-7161.
