57-year-old man sentenced for speeding away from traffic stop, dragging a police officer: BCHP
DELTA – A 57-year-old man has been sentenced to over a year in jail after he sped away from a traffic stop in Delta, dragging a police officer who suffered injuries from the traumatic incident.
In a statement, BC Highway Patrol spokesperson Sgt. Michael McLaughlin said a BCHP officer stopped a grey Nissan on February 17, 2024, just after 10:30 a.m., on Highway 91 near 72 Avenue in Delta. Police initiated the stop because the driver was suspected of having an outstanding arrest warrant.
The driver of the vehicle, identified by police as 57-year-old Tobin Haas of Vancouver, was alone in the car at the time, Sgt. McLaughlin said. When Haas was asked for a driver’s license and identification, the motorist sped away from the scene, dragging the police officer until he was able to disengage.
“Our investigators reviewed CCTV, checked police radio recordings, wrote search warrants, and took witness statements, including from the officer who was hurt,” Sgt. McLaughlin. “If you get stopped by the police, do not make a bad day worse by fleeing the scene.”
