BURNABY – Police are appealing to the public for any tips and information after a man’s body was located deceased in the eastbound lanes of Hwy. 1 in Burnaby Tuesday morning.

According to a statement from BC Highway Patrol spokesperson Sgt. Michael McLaughlin, Burnaby RCMP received a call at about 5:54 a.m. Tuesday morning (oct. 6) involving an adult male’s body that was laying in the eastbound lanes of Highway 1 just east of Kensington Avenue.

Sgt. McLaughin says the male was “obviously deceased” and had injuries consistent with being hit by a vehicle.

The eastbound lanes were completely shut down to make sure that all important evidence was preserved, he said.

DriveBC posted at 7:16 a.m. Tuesday morning that Highway 1 eastbound had been closed at Kensington Avenue due to a vehicle incident.

“Expect major delays due to congestion and use an alternate exit,” DriveBC wrote at 7:16 a.m. on its X/Twitter account. “The Kensington on-ramp to Highway 1 East is also closed.”

Sgt. McLaughlin says the BC Highway Patrol has now taken over the investigation because the victim may have been killed by a vehicle that left the scene.

“We are investigating all possibilities and have not ruled anything out at this point,” Sgt. McLaughlin said. “It’s crucial that we speak to anyone who saw anything unusual on Highway #1 near Kensington between 5:30 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. this morning.”

Police say they are particularly interested in dash camera video from anyone who was driving near Kensington in the minutes before the body was found. Even if dashcam video does not show the collision, police would like to review it to see if there is important information hidden somewhere in the background.

Anyone who has dash camera video, or who saw anything unusual, is asked to call BC Highway Patrol – Burnaby at 604-526-9744 and quote file 1003 2026-3360.

Police will hold a media availability at RCMP E Division headquarters in Surrey later this morning to answer questions about the incident.
