ABBOTSFORD – Police in Abbotsford now say a woman accused of littering on two occasions in Abbotsford has been located and fined.

In a statement, Abbotsford PD spokesperson Sgt. Paul Walker says police received information about two recent littering incidents that went viral on social media. The two incidents are believed to have occurred in late July at Mill Lake Park and, more recently, near Bluejay Elementary School.

Within hours, that video that circulated online proved invaluable as the Abbotsford PD was able to identify the woman involved to move the investigation forward.

“As a result, officers attended the woman’s residence and issued two violation tickets for littering totalling $1,000,” Sgt. Walker said.

Due to privacy legislation, police are not permitted to release the ID of the person involved.

“These incidents understandably generated strong reactions. Our job is to objectively investigate & take action having considered all the relevant information,” Sgt. Walker said. “One of the many things we have learned over years of conducting investigations is that incidents like this are rarely as straightforward as they appear. There are often many circumstances & challenges occurring behind the scenes, not visible from a short video clip. While those things may not represent an excuse for behaviour, they may help explain or better understand what occurred.”

Police say a positive example set by the majority of the Abbotsford community who shared information responsibly enabled police identify the individual.

“This is what effective community policing looks like: citizens & police working together in a measured, thoughtful & respectful way,” Sgt. Walker said. “This case also highlights the importance of reporting incidents to police. Public reporting remains one of the most valuable tools we have in addressing & maintaining public confidence.”

Police also highlighted some of the negative commentary circulating on social media.

“While people are entitled to express their frustration about the behaviour captured, racist, discriminatory & hateful comments directed at an individual’s race, ethnicity, or background are unacceptable,” he said. “Those remarks do nothing to solve the problem & they undermine the values of respect, inclusion & community Abbotsford is known for. On behalf of the AbbyPD, thank you to everyone who assisted. Your cooperation, combined with a thoughtful & measured response helped bring this matter to a timely resolution & demonstrated what we can accomplish together.”
