Cultus Lake Waterpark extends closure date as 3 agencies will need to sign off before it reopens

CULTUS LAKE – Cultus Lake Waterpark says it will not reopen until it gets the green light from three regulatory agencies in the aftermath of Monday’s incident that sent a dozen people to hospital with serious injuries.

Twelve students were taken to hospital Monday after what appears to have been an electrical incident at the waterpark.

Cpl. Carmen Kiener with Chilliwack RCMP confirmed in an email that the children were in stable condition after receiving “serious but non-life-threatening injuries” at Cultus Lake Waterpark, near Chilliwack.

Ken Hoff, assistant director of communications for the Coquitlam School District, said the students from Minnekhada Middle School sustained “unspecified” injuries.

He said the incident occurred during a field trip for Grade 6 and 7 students.

A statement from BC Emergency Health Services said it had received a call shortly after 11 a.m. and dispatched ambulances, advanced care paramedics and other resources to the site.

Two of the 10 people hospitalized had to be transported by air ambulance, it said.

In a statement posted to social media Tuesday, the water park said it will be closed through to at least Monday, June 22.

“Our thoughts and prayers continue to go out to all the victims, their families and classmates who were affected by the electrical incident which occurred yesterday. As we are in the early stages of review, information is limited. WorkSafe BC, and Technical Safety BC are actively investigating the incident, and their findings will be reported. We are fully cooperating with all authorities as they complete this process,” Cultus Lake Waterpark said.

The company also says it will not confirm a reopening date for a variety of reasons.

“Our immediate closure will continue to be extended and ongoing as needed to adequately complete all thorough reviews, and for us to address the findings and required actions. Cultus Lake Waterpark will not reopen until approval is given from WorkSafe BC, Technical Safety BC and Fraser Health,” it said.

Monday’s incident occurred at the bottom of the park’s Zero to 60 waterslide attraction, past the end of the slide. Located there, is a steel frame tent structure with handrails. This structure is understood to be the object which victims came in contact with.

“This incident was tragic and we are deeply upset by what these children experienced at our park,” the company said.
