ABBOTSFORD – WorkSafeBC has issued multiple penalties to several businesses for unsafe work practices at four Abbotsford worksites.

According to its website, WorkSafeBC issued a $5,000 fine on March 3 to Avon Valley Homes Inc. for an unsafe excavation in Abbotsford. Avon Valley Homes Inc. was the prime contractor for a house construction worksite. WorkSafeBC says it inspected the site and issued a stop-work order after witnessing unsafe excavation practices.

During a follow-up inspection, the independent provincial agency says it observed a subcontracted firm’s workers conducting framing activities within the evacuated area, which violated the stop-work order. The firm failed to comply with the WorkSafeBC order, which was considered a high-risk violation in these circumstances.

Another construction firm incurred a $5,000 fine last month. WorkSafeBC had issued a stop-work order at Kush Construction Ltd.’s Abbotsford work site after witnessing an unsafe excavation. During a follow-up inspection, the independent provincial agency saw Kush’s workers doing framing within the excavated area, deemed a high-risk violation in these circumstances.

Level Up Roofing generated a $2,500 fine at its Abbotsford worksite. The company had been replacing the roof of a two-storey home. WorkSafeBC attended the worksite and saw four workers on the roof wearing protective harnesses but not connected to lifelines. No other fall protection was in place, which exposes workers to fall risks exceeding three metres (10 feet). The company did not ensure fall protection was in place, constituting a repeated and high-risk violation.

On March 10, WorkSafeBC imposed a fine of $1,250 to PDR Construction Ltd. for violations at their Abbotsford work site. The firm was framing a house. WorkSafeBC inspected the work site and saw two workers walking past unguarded floor openings on the raised main floor. The firm failed to ensure that raised areas accessible to workers had guards or guardrails installed, a repeated violation.
