Two Kamloops teens among 3 that sadly died in Alberta highway crash

STAVELY, ALBERTA — UPDATE (5:00 p.m.): Claresholm RCMP say the collision occurred at about 11:00 a.m. Monday, when a passenger car collided with a semi-truck pulling gravel at the corner of Highway 2 and 55 Avenue in Stavely.

The car was travelling eastbound on 55 Avenue while the semi was heading northbound on Highway 2.

RCMP say the 40-year-old driver of the semi was treated at the scene for minor injuries. The three teenagers were pronounced dead at the scene.

EARLIER: Two Kamloops teenagers were among three junior hockey teammates killed in a horrific highway crash in Alberta Monday (Feb. 2).

A photo posted to social media identifies the victims as J.J. Wright and Cameron Casorso, both 18 years old and from Kamloops, and 17-year-old American-born player Caden Fine.

According to the Mustangs, the players were on their way to a team practice Monday when the collision took place.

“There are no words that can adequately express the depth of our grief.” said the team in a statement posted to social media. “These young men were more than hockey players — they were teammates, sons, brothers, friends and deeply loved members of our Mustangs family and the communities we call home.”

“We are a family and today our family is hurting.”

There is no word what caused the crash.

Mike Gilroy, a former player co-ordinator with the Mustangs, says the players were a group of inspiring young men who cared deeply for hockey.

The crash has stirred up memories of April 2018, when a bus carrying the Broncos collided with a semi truck that blew through a stop sign near Tisdale, Sask., killing 16 people and injuring 13.

On Monday, the Calgary Flames and the Toronto Maple Leafs paid tribute to the three players with a moment of silence before puck drop.
