SURREY — Charges have been approved against a 49-year-old man related to an overnight shooting that sent one to hospital on New Year’s Day.

At around 11:45 p.m., Surrey police responded to reports of shots being fired at a home in the area of 140B Street and 59 Avenue.

Officers then found an injured man with a gunshot wound, who was then taken to hospital in stable condition.

A second man was arrested at the scene.

On January 28, the BC Prosecution Service approved a number of charges against Chanchal Badwal.

He faces one count each of attempted murder, discharging a firearm with intent to endanger life, possessing a loaded prohibited firearm, discharging a prohibited firearm, and a breach of release order.

Only months prior, a 48-year-old man with the same name also pleaded guilty to manslaughter in an Abbotsford homicide in the summer of 2023.

Badwal remains in custody pending his next court appearance on Friday, February 6.
