MAPLE RIDGE – Mounties in Maple Ridge say a male suspect barricaded himself inside an empty home on 231B Street on Wednesday after getting reports of an assault with a weapon, resulting in the deployment of ERT members.

According to a statement from the Ridge Meadows RCMP detachment, officers were called to the 11700 block of 231B Street at about 5 p.m. for a reported assault.

Officers attended and located the alleged male suspect alone outside a residence in the area. Police say the suspect was exhibiting signs of mental distress and was not complying with officer demands.

The suspect eventually entered the empty residence and proceeded to barricade himself inside.

Out of an abundance of caution, police say additional support was brought in to assist with removing the suspect from the residence.

With support from the BC RCMP Lower Mainland District Emergency Response Team (ERT) and Police Dog Services, the suspect was apprehended under the Mental Health Act and taken to hospital to be assessed.

No injuries were reported.

The investigation is still ongoing.

During the incident, police officers also arrested another individual for breaching the police perimeter after repeated warnings to clear the area.

“Ridge Meadows RCMP appreciates the public’s assistance in these matters, as it for the public and officers’ safety that these perimeters and precautions are in effect during an unfolding police incident,” the detachment said.
