MAPLE RIDGE – The Maple Ridge Walmart was evacuated over the weekend after Mounties were alerted about a police incident there.

According to a statement from Curtis Harling, media and communications coordinator for the Ridge Meadows RCMP detachment, police were dispatched to the 11800 block of 224 Street at about 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon. Responding officers arrived and on scene and learned that an individual had deployed a fire extinguisher inside the Walmart and may have been having a mental health crisis.

Harling says officers evacuated the store and established containment procedures while they tried to de-escalate the situation.

The individual was eventually apprehended under the Mental Health Act with the help of assisting agencies, before being transported to hospital with minor injuries.

“No further information will be released at this time,” Harling said. “Ridge Meadows RCMP appreciated the assistance of our partners, and cooperation of the public, during this matter.”

A person reported in a Maple Ridge Facebook group that an area of the Walmart was closed off Sunday with a white wall because some products had been allegedly contaminated, presumably because of the incident a day before. Fire personnel attended the store Sunday morning checking alarms and conducting inspection activities.
