The Chilliwack Chiefs faced the division-leading Coquitlam Express Friday night for the fourth time this season. With the home team victorious in each of the first three games of the season series, the Chiefs aimed to keep that trend alive. Coquitlam has had a more successful season thus far, but in the last 10, Chilliwack has picked up more points, making for an exciting matchup between these division rivals.

It was a busy first period that leaned heavily in the Chiefs’ favour. Chilliwack got on the board just 3:27 into the game with a great coast-to-coast goal from Chiefs’ captain, Nico Grabas, marking his 14th of the season. Adam Boatter and Ben Laurette picked up assists on the goal that saw Grabas start behind his own net before picking up speed, making his way through two Coquitlam players, and putting one home on the backhand. Some great passes from Nico Grabas and Reese Shaw, set Dustin Renas up for his 12th of the season at 10:02. After a failed clear by an Express player, and a good keep in by Chiefs’ Adam Kral, Connor Dick scored his 9th of the season at 15:42. Ryan Small and Adam Kral picked up assists on the Chiefs’ 3rd goal of the game. Following Connor Dick’s goal, Coquitlam opted to pull their goalie, and Ryan Parker came into the game for Maddox Osaka. Chilliwack wasn’t done yet for the first period. Vladimir Laptev, in his Chiefs debut, scored his 1st career BCHL goal at 19:16 just as the Chiefs’ power play had come to an end. Adam Boatter and Connor Dick were credited with the helpers on Laptev’s goal. Chilliwack ended the 1st period with a comfortable 4-0 lead and only allowed the Coquitlam Express to get four shots on goal.

Coquitlam got on the board first in the second period at 5:49 with a goal by Nate Crema from Nolan Flynn and Kim Elfving. At 10:55, Reese Shaw scored his 8th of the season to restore Chilliwack’s four-goal lead after a pass from Nico Grabas was interrupted by the stick of the Express goalie, Ryan Parker, bouncing the puck right to Shaw out front. Cole Hutchinson also picked up an assist on Shaw’s goal. The second period saw Coquitlam outshooting Chilliwack 9-5, but ultimately the Chiefs were able to go into the second intermission still up by four.

While Coquitlam looked to decrease their deficit in the third period, Chilliwack stood their ground. At 16:04, Connor Dick scored his 2nd of the game and 10th of the season from a tough angle on the power play with assists from Reese Shaw and Vladimir Laptev. With his assist on Connor Dick’s goal, Reese Shaw moved into 2nd in the league in assists with 24 on the season. Ben Laurette saved all ten of the shots he faced in the 3rd period to seal the deal on the Chiefs’ 6-1 victory over the Coquitlam Express.

The last home game of 2025 was a great showing from a Chilliwack Chiefs team that has faced some adversity, being down three defencemen and forward, Maximillian Brunner, who is getting set to represent Germany in the World Junior Championships. The Chiefs will be back at the Coliseum in the new year on Saturday, January 3rd, at 6 pm as they face the Langley Rivermen for the first time this regular season.
