UPDATE #3: The City of Chilliwack says a contractor has cleared the debris slide on Vedder Mountain Road and is installing no-post barriers to protect the road from any additional debris. Vedder Mountain Road is expected to reopen tonight by 11 p.m. Qoqó:lem Park will remain closed until further notice.

UPDATE #2: The City of Chilliwack now says Vedder Mountain Road will remain closed near Qoqó:lem Park (45076 Vedder Mountain Road) for the time being.

“We do not have an estimated time for reopening,” the city said at 4:10 p.m. “There is still active work on the site to remove debris from the road and an assessment of the area above the slide is being done. Qoqó:lem Park will remain closed until further notice. Traffic control will remain in place.”

UPDATE: The City of Chilliwack says a “debris slide” has closed a section of Vedder Mountain Road. Here is their full statement from a social media post:

“A section of Vedder Mountain Road, west of Qoqó:lem Park, is closed due to a debris slide that happened in the early morning hours. Crews are on-site assessing damage. Please avoid the area. Traffic control is in place at Cultus Lake Roundabout to divert westbound traffic heading towards Yarrow to Keith Wilson. Traffic control is in place at Giesbrecht Road to divert eastbound traffic to alternate routes. Please check chilliwack.com/floodwatch for updates.”

Original story from 6:18 a.m. Wednesday morning:

CHILLIWACK — A section of Vedder Mountain Road in Chilliwack has been closed near the quarry after a reported mudslide happened late Tuesday night.

Traffic control vehicles have been set up to block traffic on Vedder Mountain Road. Motorists coming from Chilliwack and Sardis can still access Cultus Lake and Columbia Valley at the roundabout. Vedder Mountain Road is blocked at Giesbrecht Road and Vedder Mountain Road farther west.

Residents who wish to drive to Yarrow will need to take the Keith Wilson Bridge over to Boundary Road and then over to Yarrow Central Road.

The debris discharge was still active as of 5:40 a.m. Wednesday morning amid torrential downpours, meaning it’s likely the section of Vedder Mountain Road will be closed for several more hours while a road assessment takes place.

Chilliwack resident Michael Simon was out on his back patio with his wife overlooking the Vedder River Tuesday night when he began recording audio of the apparent mudslide. The audio is recorded below.

He later reported seeing traffic control lights and RCMP vehicle lights on the south side of the river around where the reported mudslide occurred.
