UPDATE #2: Chilliwack RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Alexandra Greenley now says a 27-year-old local mom was the victim of Monday’s tragedy at Island 22 after she was tragically struck by a tree limb.

According to a statement released Tuesday morning (Dec. 16), Sgt. Greenley says Chilliwack RCMP received a report at about 3:12 p.m. Monday for a female who had been struck by a tree limb, on a trail near the dog park at Island 22. The female had been walking with her two young children when this occurred. The weather at the time was severe and unpredictable, characterized by high winds and heavy rain, Sgt. Greenley.

Police say two other people who were in the area at the time called 9-1-1 and provided care to the female. Chilliwack Fire Department and Emergency Health Services attended and provided life‑saving measures. Unfortunately, the 27‑year‑old Chilliwack woman was pronounced deceased at the scene, Sgt. Greenley said.

The BC Coroners Service attended and continues to investigate.

“At this time, there is no indication of this being anything other than a tragic and unforeseen event,” Sgt. Greenley said.

Next of kin notifications have been completed, she said.  The children were not physically harmed and are with family now.

“The Chilliwack RCMP would like to thank the members of the public who acted quickly to help the female, and care for the children, during this difficult incident,” Sgt. Greenley said.

Original story:

CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack first responders were paged at approximately 3 p.m. Monday afternoon (Dec. 15) after a tree reportedly toppled and struck an individual at the Island 22 dog park, located west of Young Road in Chilliwack.

Scanner traffic indicated a 30-year-old individual had been struck and was injured by a fallen tree. A helicopter was initially paged at one point for a possible launch but was not required.

RCMP members and Victim Services personnel were asked to attend. There were children present during the traumatic incident, which is why Victim Services was requested to attend.

An ambulance advised a pedestrian near the scene at 3:38 p.m. that the dog park was closed.

Yellow caution tape had been draped across the area around where the accident happened. At least three RCMP units and three ambulances attended.

Ambulance paramedics who were already on scene notified dispatch at one point that it looked as though trees would topple, so they decided to wait until RCMP arrived to investigate further.

Winds were strong and blustery as of 3:38 p.m., with trees adjacent to the Fraser River swaying to the left and right.
