SURREY — A $2.88 billion hospital project has received a sizable donation to support the purchase of state-of-the-art technology and train hundreds of cancer care staff in the Fraser Valley.

The BC Cancer Foundation, in partnership with RBC, has announced a $1 million investment for the new BC Cancer Centre under development in Surrey.

Funding will support new equipment, including PET/CT scanners and LINACs, as well as the upskilling of over 400 workers, including more than 100 nurses and 70 oncologists.

“By investing in the people behind the care — the nurses, oncologists and researchers — we are helping build a stronger, more innovative health care system for the future,” said Martin Thibodeau, B.C. regional president with RBC.

Prospective staff will receive training in technology, clinical trials, nurse onboarding and more. The Centre will also offer hubs for brachytherapy and theranostics research.

The project is expected to deliver about 50,000 radiation therapy and 22,000 chemotherapy visits annually. It will also be attached to a hospital with over 168 beds and an emergency department featuring 55 treatment spaces.

The Centre broke ground in September 2023 and is targeted to open in 2030.
