ABBOTSFORD — While its varsity counterparts ran into a buzzsaw against the No. 1-ranked Mouat Hawks, G.W. Graham’s JV team sent a strong message to the rest of the conference with a 49-0 win over Mouat in its regular season opener last week.

Riding high after a 4-1 preseason, the JV Grizzlies parlayed that momentum by overwhelming the JV Hawks with a balanced offensive attack and a suffocating defense that allowed less than 40 yards of total offense on the day.

Offensively, the Grizzlies were firing on all cylinders. Running back Landon Keddy exploded for 119 yards and 2 touchdowns on just 4 carries, while receiver Jackson Gamboa added 62 yards and a touchdown on 4 receptions. The team totaled 242 rushing yards and 118 passing yards, aided by outstanding blocking from an offensive line anchored by tackles Cooper Cools and Brady Henderson, guards Cole Dempsey and Max Kiener, and center Austin Pierce.

Kicking duties were flawless as well, with Tyler Ekland converting all 7 PAT attempts, adding consistency to the team’s scoring efforts.

On the defensive side, linebacker Cohen Magnusson led the charge with 5 tackles, setting the tone for a relentless unit that kept the Hawks in check throughout the game. Defensive ends Max Ferguson and Brady Henderson contributed 4 and 3 tackles respectively, while safety Oakley Veentra added 3 stops and helped shut down any deep threats.

With both units performing at a high level, the Grizzlies now turn their focus to their next test — a home matchup against the Abbotsford Secondary Panthers this Thursday, October 9 at 2:30 p.m. at Exhibition Stadium. Fans are encouraged to come out and cheer on the Grizzlies as they aim to keep their undefeated start alive.
