CHILLIWACK — A Chilliwack RCMP spokesperson says police have arrested a 39-year-old man with an apparent history of criminal activity after he engaged in dangerous driving behaviours during a Saturday night incident in Chilliwack.

According to a statement from spokesperson Martin Godart, a member of the Chilliwack RCMP traffic unit initiated a traffic stop under the Motor Vehicle Act at approximately 10 p.m. on Saturday night, August 31. Police say the driver fled the scene and subsequently engaged in driving behaviours that were increasingly dangerous to the public.

RCMP members from the traffic unit, general duty and support sections stopped the vehicle in the 7000 block of Vedder Road and took 39-year-old Ian Gerald Mountain into custody for dangerous operation, flight from a peace officer, operation while prohibited, operation while impaired and obstruction.

Cpl. Godart told Fraser Valley Today in an emailed statement that Mountain remains in custody, and the investigation is ongoing.

Police did not advise if there was a police chase or if there were any injuries as a result of the incident.

Pictures supplied by Chilliwack resident Hailey VanBasten show Vedder Road blocked by police while first responders were at the scene, as well as a white SUV that was involved in the incident, and an RCMP SUV cruiser loaded onto the back of a tow truck.

A man bearing the name Ian Gerald Mountain was sought by authorities in 2019 after he was wanted for possession of property obtained by crime, possession of a prohibited or restricted weapon with ammunition, driving while on a prohibition, and failure to comply with recognizance.
