Heavy road traffic expected through Fraser Valley and on ferries for holiday weekend
CHILLIWACK — The last long weekend of the summer is set to bring heavy traffic across British Columbia as residents take advantage of the final days of the season. B.C. Ferries is preparing for a significant surge, expecting to carry 530,000 passengers and over 204,000 vehicles over the Labor Day weekend.
The Ministry of Transportation is advising drivers to stay alert and prioritize safety on the roads. With traffic expected to be particularly dense on popular routes, the Ministry suggests allowing extra travel time or considering trips during off-peak hours to avoid congestion.
Earlier this week, the provincial government announced changes to penalties for reckless driving habits. Starting Sunday (Sept.1), penalties for impaired driving, excessive speeding, street racing, and driving without a license will include higher towing and storage fees for impounded vehicles.
“By imposing stricter financial consequences on dangerous driving, we are sending a very clear message that reckless behaviour on our roads will not be tolerated,” said Deputy Chief Fiona Wilson, president of the BC Association of Chiefs of Police. “Our goal is to protect all road users and reduce the tragic loss of life that too often results from these preventable actions.”
