Chilliwack woman scammed out of $22,000 after she wired money to India
CHILLIWACK — Mounties in Chilliwack say a Chilliwack woman was scammed out of $22,000 after being convinced that she needed to help stop a scam by wiring money to the RCMP in India.
According to a news release from the Chilliwack RCMP media relations unit, a woman contacted the Chilliwack RCMP detachment on Saturday, August 17 after she received a call from someone claiming to be from Scotia Bank’s security team. The caller persuaded the woman that they needed her assistance to stop a scam in progress.
“Scammers are constantly evolving their tactics to trick people into losing their hard-earned money. It is crucial to for residents to be vigilant when receiving unexpected phone calls. Always take the time to verify who is calling before sharing any personal information to ensure you are not falling victim to a scam,” advised Cpl. Carmen Kiener, spokesperson for the Chilliwack RCMP.
