CHILLIWACK — Season openers on home turf don’t get much better than what the Valley Huskers treated their fans to Saturday night before a packed house at Exhibition Stadium in Chilliwack.

Quarterback Tyran Duval recorded 21 completions, including five touchdown passes amid 332 total passing yards, and running back Jawad Harb rushed 14 times for 127 yards and two touchdowns, as the Huskers rolled to a dominant 51-7 win.

“I thought for Week 1 this was a good game for us,” Valley Huskers head coach Bob Reist said. “We have a lot of things to clean up for next week, but it was a good starting point. Our offence moved the ball with relative ease but we need to eliminate turnovers if we are going to be successful.”

The Huskers rolled to a 14-0 lead early in the first half and never really looked back. Wide receiver Steven Koniuck hauled in six catches for 130 yards and four TDs, earning Player of the Week honours.

“Steven had a great start to the season,” Reist said. “He was a handful to cover, presenting mismatches everywhere he lined up. He has speed, good hands and runs clean routes. Expect big things from him this season!”

Luc Rodrigues became a primary target with five receptions for 101 yards.

The Huskers racked up 223 rushing yards due in large part to Jawad Harb, who carried 14 times for 127 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively, the Huskers were anchored by Tyson Hulgan’s two sacks and linebacker Jon Banal’s nine solo tackles. Aidan Harker pitched in with seven solo tackles.

The Huskers surrendered only one touchdown on a scoring pass from Broncos QB Ryan Petersen to Kaleb Senz. Otherwise, the Huskers looked strong on defence.

“Defensively, I thought we played a solid game. We were physical and flowed to the ball well. One mistake cost us big and they were able to score. We need to eliminate penalties and mistakes moving forward.”

The Huskers will host the undefeated Okanagan Sun 2-0 this Saturday, August 3 at Exhibition Stadium.
