YOUR PERSPECTIVE: New Year, new NDP?

Jan 3, 2024 | 8:00 AM

The start of a new year brings with it a vast array of emotions. For some, welcoming 2024 comes with hope and anticipation, for others maybe some dread or anxiety. Whatever your feelings on the new year, or your opinions on the cliché of New Year’s resolutions, I do think the idea of looking forward, of evaluating where you are and where you want to be, is worthwhile.

As an elected official, I have my own goals for 2024, and things I want to accomplish on behalf of my constituents. However, this year, I hope the NDP government has a long list of resolutions and goals for themselves, and more than anything, I hope they do a much better job of accomplishing them this year than last.

Premier David Eby and his NDP government have proven they have no problems setting goals. They have no difficulty making announcements and promises to British Columbians about everything they hope to achieve — the problem is they have demonstrated they are incapable of delivering on them.

Over and over again we have seen this NDP government make big promises and then break them. In the 2017 election, they ran on a commitment to “make life more affordable.” Seven years later we can all see how that worked out. The NDP promised $10-a-day childcare for everyone who needs it, to improve housing affordability, eliminate school portables, and address the toxic drug crisis that is taking a record number of lives.

Have we seen any of these goals realized after more than half a decade of NDP leadership? Wherever you live in B.C. the answer is sadly, no.

Rather than improving the lives of British Columbians, this government has presided over overlapping crises. By nearly every metric, people are worse off today than they were seven years ago. Daily necessities like gas, groceries, and housing are more expensive than ever. Our healthcare system is crumbling and one in five people do not have a family doctor. There is increasing violence and drug use on our streets and nearly seven people die from toxic drugs every day. Food bank use has skyrocketed and there are more people experiencing homelessness in B.C. than ever before.

These are not the results of a government that knows how to achieve its goals or deliver results for everyday people.

British Columbians do not want a government that simply says the right things, they want one that does what is necessary to make people’s lives better. A responsible government has a clear plan and tangible steps it will take to achieve its goals.

Our BC United Caucus spent the last year laying out the roadmap for exactly what we will do to address the issues that people are facing.

We announced our ‘Better is Possible’ plan — a compassionate treatment and recovery-focused mental health and addictions plan that prioritizes saving lives and getting people well. We presented ‘SaferBC,’ our plan to address the public safety crisis that is causing chaos on our streets. Additionally, we announced our wildfire plan and immediate steps we would take to save people money, including eliminating the provincial fuel tax — saving people up to $30 every time they fill their vehicle with gas — and eliminating the carbon tax from on-farm fuel use to reduce operating costs for farmers, in turn lowering the cost of groceries.

These are not more empty NDP promises, they are real plans with concrete solutions to the problems that impact people every single day.

The best part is — we are just getting started.

In 2024, our BC United Caucus will be announcing even more exciting plans for how we will address the challenges facing our province and deliver the results British Columbians truly deserve.
