CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack city council approved a zoning bylaw amendment and a development permit variance request at its meeting on Tuesday (Oct. 10) that would facilitate the construction of a five-storey complex south of Vedder Road and Keith Wilson Road near Vedder Crossing.

The applicant, listed as 1356981 BC Ltd. and/or Kamaljit Gill in city documents, had petitioned the City of Chilliwack to rezone 45631 and 45641 Morton Road, about 150 metres north of the Vedder Bridge, in order to build a five-storey apartment complex.

According to the applicant’s public engagement package, the 32 units comprise eight one-bedroom units, 17 one-bedroom units with a den, three two-bedroom units and four three-bedroom units. The development calls for 54 parking stalls in an underground parkade.

No one spoke against the five-storey apartment complex at a public hearing on Tuesday night.

In supporting the housing development, Councillor Chris Kloot said Chilliwack is desperate for housing.

“We’re in desperate need of housing starts in our community, much like any other community,” Kloot said during Tuesday night’s council meeting. “This location absorbing 32 new residents or new families will be an asset to the area. We know the road will have some work done to it. We know sidewalks will be put in place and lighting. We know the applicant has no variance with respect to parking; they’re increasing the parking requirements. I’m happy to support it.”

The final design of the five-storey housing complex will need to go before the city’s design review committee before it can move forward.

“I know the next step will come before the design review committee,” said Kloot, who is part of that committee. “We’ll have a good going over it to make sure it’s an attractive, well-designed development that will make the neighbourhood proud.”

The city did receive one email from a nearby neighbour at 5352 Vedder Road who expressed support for the redevelopment of the two properties, but did express concern over the lack of nearby parking on Morton Road.

All three councillors present, including Kloot, Bud Mercer and Nicole Huitema Read, and Mayor Ken Popove, supported the proposal.
