She worked to provide low-cost spays/neuters, affordable veterinary care for financially challenged members of the community, and promote the health and well-being of the community's four-legged friends. Vermerris also provided treatments for worms, fleas, mites and low-cost vaccinations and basic first aid care in the home, along with sound advice, to the best of her knowledge.

CHILLIWACK — A Chilliwack resident who sought to promote the health and well-being of cats and dogs, and provide low-cost spays and neuters for pet owners facing financial struggles, has passed.

According to a tribute dated Wednesday, August 30 on the Facebook page of Ena’s Community Cats, Ena Vermerris passed away peacefully in her home earlier this week.

“It’s with very heavy hearts that we share with you that Ena Vermerris has passed away,” the Facebook tribute said. “She passed peacefully in her home last night, just after 1 in the morning. Ena’s life is one that touched so many around her. From cats to people, she cared deeply about her patients (both two and four-legged) and her friends.”

According to the Ena’s Community Cats website, Vermerris was well known in Chilliwack for her tireless work with underprivileged cats and dogs. Her mission aimed to provide low-cost spays and neuters, affordable veterinary care for financially challenged members of the community, and promote the health and well-being of the community’s four-legged friends. Vermerris also provided treatments for worms, fleas, mites and low-cost vaccinations and basic first aid care in the home, along with sound advice, to the best of her knowledge.

Because she loved cats and dogs and made it her calling in life, Vermerris never accepted any money for her advocacy.

“Her quick wit, indomitable spirit, passion for the welfare of cats, work ethic, altruistic spirit, sense of fairness and justice, resolve and tenacity made her an inspiration to everyone who knew her,” the Facebook tribute stated. “For all of her years of founding and running Safe Haven, and later Ena’s Community Cats, she never took a dime. She worked from a sense of duty and a deep desire to improve the lives of cats in our community.”

As funds allow, the good work of Ena’s Community Cats will continue. Vermerris did wish for donations to come to Ena’s Community Cats in lieu of flowers.

“It has been an honour and a privilege to have served Ena for almost a decade on this page,” the Facebook tribute concluded. “We’ll be leaving it up to allow anyone wishing to pay their respects to do so. Her memory, her kindness, and the difference that she has made will live on in all of us. Goodbye, dear Ena.”
