HOPE — The Kookipi Creek fire originally located approximately 16 kilometres northwest of Boston Bar and seven kilometres east of Nahatlatch Lake has grown over 1,200 hectares in size in less than 24 hours.

According to the BC Wildfire Service website and its Facebook page, the wildfire (V11337) was 8,791 hectares in size as of Friday afternoon at 4:51 p.m.

It has since expanded to an incredible magnitude of 10,500 hectares as of Saturday, August 19 at 11:27 a.m., the BCWS website indicated.

Highway 1 between Haig Station Road, just north of Hope, and Lytton remains closed. Much of the highway between Hope and Lytton has been closed since Thursday night, August 17.

Drive BC, in partnership with the BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, says there is no detour available for Highway 1 motorists.

BCWS reports that elevated winds, following a period of hot, dry conditions, have resulted in extreme fire behaviour and further growth to north and east past the Nahatlatch and Fraser Rivers. The fire crossed Highway 1, which resulted in the closure of the highway in both directions.

It was approximately 2,000 hectares in size as of Thursday night, and is considered a highly vigorous surface and crown fire.

BCWS says it is using three ground crews, three helicopters and a bird-dog aircraft to fight the fire.

Evacuation orders remain in effect for Keefers, Boothroyd, Blue Lake Resort, Chaumox, and the area of Kookipi Creek along both north and south sides of the Nahatlatch River, west of Highway 1.

The evacuation order by the Fraser Valley Regional District will remain in effect until further notice.
