Cooling centres to open as temperatures heat up in Chilliwack

CHILLIWACK — Mother Nature is sending hot weather into southern B.C. next week, which means the region is expecting daytime high temperatures that will reach up to 33 next week. Humidex values could make it feel two or three degrees warmer.

In response to the sweltering temperatures, the City of Chilliwack will temporarily open two locations as cooling centres. The centres will open Monday at the Evergreen Hall at 9291 Corbould Street and at the Sardis Sports Complex at 5725 Tyson Road.

The cooling centres will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. from Monday to Thursday next week.

Residents may bring along a pet but only if the pet is in a crate or on a short leash.

Filtered water fountains will be active at both locations. Residents are urged to bring their own refillable water bottle. Bottled water may also be available.

The City is urging residents to drink plenty of water in the days leading up to the heat to avoid dehydration. When cooling centres aren’t available, residents can seek out free air-conditioned spaces, such as local malls, libraries and leisure centres. Staying cool at a spray park is also an option.

During hot spells like the one being predicted, residents are asked to keep in contact with their loved ones to ensure everyone remains safe. Reaching out to an elderly neighbour can also help to protect the health and safety of residents.

The City of Chilliwack website also has a page dedicated to advice to beat the heat. It can be accessed by clicking here.
