CHILLIWACK — Engine 6 (Greendale) from the Chilliwack Fire Department was dispatched for the report of a small fire in an industrial area southeast of Ritchie Brothers in Chilliwack, resulting in a request to CN Rail that rail traffic be briefly suspended.

According to scanner traffic Sunday night, Engine 6 responded to the area at approximately 8:50 p.m. Sunday (August 6) with a crew of five firefighters for the report of a fire southeast of Ritchie Brothers on Industrial Way.

At one point, Chilliwack firefighters had to reportedly go about 500 metres along the railroad tracks to access the small fire. Before they did, however, Chilliwack Fire Department personnel asked emergency dispatch to contact CN and ask that train traffic through the area be stopped. Dispatch confirmed with Chilliwack firefighters that they had been in contact with CN and train traffic through the area was briefly stopped.

As of 9:21 p.m. Sunday night, Chilliwack Fire crews radioed dispatch to say the fire had been extinguished and crews would be clearing the scene by walking along the railroad track area.

The railroad ties sustained minor fire damage. Chilliwack Fire asked emergency dispatch to contact CN about the fire damage.

Chilliwack Fire Department personnel responded to multiple calls throughout the day Sunday, including the report of a small industrial fire in the 47600 block of Yale Road, and a medical assist call on Rowanna Crescent.

The most serious medical call, however, appeared to be a call in which an elderly man was reportedly hit on the head on Margaret Avenue at about 12:05 a.m. early Sunday morning. RCMP responded to the scene as did Chilliwack Fire personnel, according to scanner traffic monitored by Chilliwack resident Julie Hiscock. Ambulance personnel with BC EHS arrived on scene to the Margaret Avenue incident at about 12:35 p.m. The elderly man reportedly suffered a laceration to his forehead.
