CHILLIWACK — The neighbours might give you grief for your awful-looking lawn, or disinvite you from a summer BBQ, but Chilliwack residents could win one of three Visa gift cards by going brown this summer.

The City of Chilliwack wants to reward Chilliwack residents who trade in their normally green lawns for brown, dormant ones in the city-sponsored “Chilliwack’s Ugliest Lawn” contest.

The city is inviting residents from all across the city, including homeowners and tenants alike, to let their lawns die in an effort to preserve the Sardis-Vedder Aquifer, from which the city gets the majority of its drinking water.

“Did you know that all the water that enters your home is drinking water?” the city wrote on its website. “Whether it’s used for drinking, cooking, bathing, flushing the toilet, washing your car or watering your garden, we rely heavily on this water and need to conserve it.”

All “ugly” lawns and water conservation alternatives such as a vegetable garden and / or rock gardens are welcome for consideration. Submit a photo of your ugly lawn to waterconservation@chilliwack.com to be considered for prizes. Additional entries can be made of vegetable gardens or other water conservation initiatives such as rain barrels.

The contest will run from Thursday, June until September 30. The last day to submit photos to be considered for the prizes is October 13. Winners will be chosen by November 10 and contacted via email.

Anyone located within the City of Chilliwack can participate and send in pictures of their “ugly” lawn. Winners may be required to provide address to confirm location is within Chilliwack.

Prizes consist of three Visa gift cards in the amount of $150, $100 and $50, respectively, for first, second and third-place winners.
