ABBOTSFORD — The University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) is set to recognize four individuals with honorary degrees at its upcoming convocation ceremonies in June. In a news release, UFV says the four have made significant contributions to society and their communities.

One of the recipients is Dr. Bonnie Henry, who played a pivotal role in leading British Columbia’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. UFV says Dr. Henry, the Provincial Health Officer of BC, has dedicated her career to public health and has been on the frontlines of several disease outbreaks. She is the first woman to hold the position of Provincial Health Officer in British Columbia. Her expertise in public health, preventative medicine, and global pandemics has been instrumental in safeguarding public health.

Naxaxalhts’i Sonny McHalsie, a prominent interpreter of the Stó:lō cultural tradition and history, will also receive an honorary degree. His efforts to preserve and share the knowledge of the Stó:lō people have made him an invaluable bridge between Elders and current scholars. Through his work as an instructor, mentor, and historian, McHalsie has ensured that the Stó:lō cultural heritage is passed down to future generations.

Mike Retasket, a renowned dancer, drummer, political leader, negotiator, and traditional Secwépemc knowledge keeper, will be recognized for his multifaceted contributions. UFV says his profound understanding of Indigenous customs and extensive involvement in various organizations, has helped Retasket play a crucial role in advocating for Indigenous rights and preserving cultural heritage.
