Prolific offender in custody after Abbotsford police stop stolen vehicle

UPDATE: ABBOTSFORD — Abbotsford police have arrested a person identified as a prolific offender after stopping a stolen vehicle on Highway 1 early Sunday (Mar. 19) morning.

Police spotted the stolen vehicle heading westbound on Highway 1 at 3:12 a.m. Officers laid down a spike belt across the highway between McCallum Road and Clearbrook Road. When the stolen vehicle crossed the belt, it soon came to a stop.

At that point the driver made a run for it. However he was quickly taken into custody with the help of the Integrated Police Dog Service. Police have identified the man as 29-year-old Tyson Zackary Fust and identified him as a prolific offender.

A 38-year-old passenger was initially taken into custody but has since been released.

Police say a fire was ignited when the friction caused by the steel rims on the pavement, ignited a fire in the stolen vehicle. Abbotsford Fire Rescue Services was needed to extinguish the flames.

Police closed westbound traffic along the highway during the incident to ensure the safety of other motorists and first responders.

EARLIER: ABBOTSFORD — Police in Abbotsford were busy dealing with the driver of a stolen vehicle early Sunday (Mar. 19) morning.

Police say patrol officers spotted a stolen vehicle as it was travelling westbound on Highway 1. Police were able to stop the vehicle with the assistance of a spike belt.

Officials closed Highway 1 between McCallum Road and Clearbrook Road for a short time while dealing with the matter.

The 29-year-old and a 38-year-old passenger were taken into custody by police. Police are expected to release more information once charges are approved.
